Why use Vitamin C on your Skin?

Free radicals are in the atmosphere and attack our skin on a daily basis causing our skin to age. If you eat an apple and leave it on the side then the oxidation process causes the flesh of the apple to go brown, this is an easy way to explain how free radicals can attack our skin and cause oxidative stress. Antioxidants can stop the free radicals attacking our skin.

As an antioxidant, vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) when used in skin care and applied directly onto the skin can give a protective layer against oxidative stress. It can prevent trans epidermal water loss. Vitamin C can also stimulate the production of new collagen and protect existing collagen. It also has a mild impact on the tyrosinase enzyme which is responsible for pigmentation.

The best time to use Vitamin C is after you have cleansed in the morning (5 drops). It can also reduce inflammation and redness during the reactive phase if you are using the NU DERM system.

10 percent – dry, sensitive skin

15 percent – most skin types

20 percent – normal to oily

Obagi (Medical grade skincare)

Most people would like to prevent skin ageing which causes pigmentation, wrinkles, decreased elasticity and depletion of collagen. 80 % of premature ageing to our skin comes from UV exposure. Of course diet, smoking, stress and hormonal changes also play important roles. When free radicals hit the skin they cause an oxidative stress reaction, this is higher in areas of pollution. What do you think is causing your skin to age the most ? Amount of sun exposure ? Your skin type ? genetics ?

If you are ever suspicious of a mole then check it using the ABCD approach. A – asymmetry, B – border, C – colour and D – diameter.

Production of melanin is a protective action. Melanocytes produce the natural pigment in our skin called melanin but they have a control centre which responds to uv, stress, hormones etc and may be overactive.

Fibroblasts produce collagen, elastin and GAGS. They could be inactive when photo damaged.

Keratinocytes produce protein, they start at the lower basal layer of the skin and work up to the stratum corneum, this is known as the skin cycle and as we age it becomes slower, causing our skin to look dull.

In healthy skin we have a thinner stratum corneum. We have properly regulated melanocytes, active fibroblasts and a strong network of elastin fibres. Botox is great but not a one stop fix, good skin care is the basis. You cannot wall paper the walls without plastering first.

Who is suitable for the Nu Derm System?

Anyone with pigmentation or melasma. The system can treat superficial and deep pigmentation. It will also treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne , acne with pigmentation and people who require general skin rejuvination. The Nu-derm system is not good for rosacea patients. Obagi penetrates all layers of the skin, improving skin turnover, increasing collagen and eradicating melanin production.

How does Vitamin A work and why is it so important in effective skin care?

Tretinoin (retinoic acid) repairs DNA, increases collagen, accelerates healing and repairs and regulates skin cells. It comes in three different strengths 0.025,0.05 or 0.1 which is the strongest form of Vitamin A.

Tretinoin can also be used for acne vulgaris as it reduces sebum and oil concentration which blocks penetration of other products. If the patient is using Benzo then they should apply this in the morning and then the tretinoin in the evening.

Retinol reduces and prevents fine lines and helps clear break outs, it improves skin tone and texture. It comes in either 0.5 or 1.0 depending on what the patient can tolerate and why they need it.

What is Hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone inhibits pigmentation it can help to lighten dark spots, melasma, freckles and sun spots. The patient must patch test by applying a small amount to unbroken skin for 24 hours. If the patient requires an alternative then they can choose the NU Derm FX range (non prescription) which contains Arbutin instead of hydroquinone which is more gentle but can take longer for results. The ‘Clear’ and the ‘Blender’ which contain either the hydroquinone or the arbutin get mixed with the Vitamin A (tretinoin or retinol) during the programme.

There are two types of kits , normal to dry or normal to oily. In the normal to oily kit the exfoderm (exfoliator) contains glycolic acid which is slightly stronger than the phytic acid used in the normal to dry exfoliator in order to get through the oilier surface and allow for deeper product penetration.

The NU DERM system can take 12 – 24 weeks for best results. You can expect the following throughout your time line;

Weeks 1-6 – redness, dryness, itching

Weeks 7-12 – inflammation subsides, improvements in fine wrinkling and pore size, skin feels firmer.

Weeks 13 – 24 – maximum improvement achieved, healthy glow, maintenance required.

Secret RF

What is Secret RF?

Secret RF is a non-surgical anti ageing device with little to no downtime and treats fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture and pigmentation. Using heat in the form of radio-frequency and micro-needles at a safe and controlled depth, the hand piece delivers heat into the skin and the needles pierce the skin intermittently in a stamping action. By adjusting the micro-needles, the energy can be delivered at altering depths so the treatment can be tailored to the individuals needs. The needle penetration is adjustable ranging from 0.5 – 3.5 mm based on the area and depth of the condition being treated. The combination of heat and needles create a controlled injury to the skin which in turn stimulates and remodels collagen. The treatment is excellent for skin laxity causing fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment can also help acne scars, sun damage and stretch marks. Down time is a day or so as the skin will look slightly pink afterwards. The treatment delivers best results if given as a course of 3 (4-6 weeks apart). It can be performed on all skin types and all year round.

Microblading or Machine needle work?

Many of my clients often ask me the difference between microblading and the machine needle  technique and which is best suited for them. I perform both procedures.

The truth is that both techniques are a form of permanent make up and therefore a form of tattooing the dermal layer of the skin. Microblading has been a huge buzz word in the beauty industry over the last 3-4 years and it truthfully can give beautiful results. Blade work rather than needle work is a manual technique where the technician dips the blade into the pigment and then scores the skin. The blade has to be held extremely straight at a 90 degree angle to the skin and the skin must be held and stretched extremely taut for the most precise result possible.  The idea is that with each stroke of the blade, an artificial hair stroke is created that can mimic real hairs. This is no different to machine needle work however in my experience the hair strokes created with the blade are finer and if done correctly can heal to a ‘crisper’ result.  Hair stroke width depends on the size of the blade, the skin type and age of the client.  The long and short of it is that microblading is a hand drawing technique and can create fine lines less likely to bleed. The healed result is very natural.

Machine work uses needles and creates a lot of tapping motions in order to penetrate the skin. The machine I use is the ‘Cosmedic’Screen Shot 2019-10-26 at 13.57.59 machine and is a super gentle micropigmentation machine NOT a tattooing machine. This technique is usually a better idea if you want to create fullness and thickness and want a longer lasting darker result. If a client has naturally darker, thicker hair and wants a more noticeable result, I would recommend machine work which is still very gentle but the needles are slightly thicker than the blade and therefore more pigment is implanted into the skin. It is possible to create hair stroke brows with the machine however the lines will not be as fine. Powdered brows can be created with the machine for clients who wish to create a denser result.

Microbladed brows will usually fade sooner and to a lighter less noticeable result due to the fact that less pigment has been applied during the process.

During the consultation it is possible to discuss which technique is best suited to your needs.

Cosmetic Tattooing – Questions Answered

Does it hurt?

The pain is minimised as much as possible by using a topical anaesthetic. The client can then relax and this allows proper insertion of the pigment. You will feel a slight discomfort, similar to tweezing the brows.

How long does it last?

It depends on the depth of the pigment used and the lifestyle of the client. We take into account that in order to keep the pigment looking fresh, a colour boost is required 12 – 16 months after doing the initial procedure.

How many appointments will i need?

You will need 1 appointment initially. This will include a thorough consultation where we will need to take photographs and check all medical details. The second appointment is a control procedure. Any imperfections that may have occurred during the healing period; due to the skin coming away etc, are rectified for the final time.

How long does it take to heal?

The skin will heal at different rates according to the strength of your immune system, your lifestyle and the care you take with your new enhancement. As a general rule two weeks is the amount of time it will take for the skin to stop flaking and itching. However a minimum of four weeks is required before coming back for a refill, as the dermal layer needs time to recover.

Semi permanent makeup is cosmetic tattooing, with coloured micro pigments being implanted into the upper dermis layer of skin, giving the appearance of makeup or a natural correction of missing hair, shape or pigment.

How long does cosmetic tattooing last ?

After the initial visits to give the result you wish to achieve, you should expect to do annual top ups to keep the colour looking fresh.   Without further top ups the colour will fade away, but some will remain for many months or years. How long permanent makeup lasts is very individual, it depends on the colour used, how much colour was used, the persons skin, lifestyle and more. Most people find the effect lasts 9 – 18 months before needing the colour topped up. If the colour is not topped up it will over many months, or years, fade away and in some cases can leave a slight residue of colour permanently.

The colour the pigment fades to during this time cannot be predicted, nor how long it will take to fade completely. For this reason you should always choose to visit with someone who will create a good long term eyebrow shape for you.  If Perfect Creations ever creates a fashion style of eyebrow, with colour implanted beyond what will ever be the clients natural shape, the client will have been advised of the long term implications.

Why do eyebrows sometimes fade orange, pink or grey ?

Eyebrows use brown pigments, and brown is made up of many colours.  Just the same as when we colour our hair, and it fades over time, everyone holds on to certain elements of brown differently.  Some people hold on to the warm tones, others the cool ones.  This is not a problem as returning for your annual top up, a corrector colour can be added to your original colour, will help correct future fading.   It has to be seen how you fade a colour, to see how to correct it for future years of good colour.

Why does the pigment fade?

Permanent makeup is also called Micropigmentation as it uses micro pigments.  Because they lack size, they also lack density of colour, so the colour fades quicker.  Were the pigment molecules bigger, the colour would be more dense and more permanent, just like normal tattoo pigment.

Permanent Cosmetics (also known as Semi Permanent Make up, Micro pigmentation and Cosmetic Tattooing) allow women of all ages, and a growing number of men, to enhance and define their natural features creating a beautiful finish which will compliment or even replace the use of conventional make up.

Why not use permanent ink ?

Think of the old saying “Why would you want a tattoo, what’s it going to look like when you’re 80 ?”, and if you’re thinking that’s only because you might regret the design you chose, that’s not the entire story when considering how a permanent tattoo will age

Pigment, whether permanent or not, changes colour over time, especially when exposed to the sun.  Black pigment goes grey, green or blue, brown can go pink or orange.  You can accept that for a body tattoo, but your eyebrows ?  or as eyeliner ?  Yes you can top up a permanent tattoo to keep the colour fresh, but you’ll never be able to change the shape without lasering off the unwanted bits.  Why would you want to change the shape ?  …Does skin stay tight forever ?  Do people have or need brow lifts ?  If you’ve chosen a fashion style of brow to be tattooed on permanently, how much do styles change, and your style, will you want those eyebrows when you’re 80, grey and wrinkly ?

That’s the colour and shape dealt with, but how well does permanent pigment stay crisp and clear in the skin ?  If you’re looking for a tattoo with lots of fine detail, the tattooist will always ask you to go large or cut out having so much detail.  Well you’ve seen old tattoos, and tattoos on old people, they blur.  Fine detail goes and the edges smudge, I’ll put the thought back in your head about the splodge of green tattoos that used to be crisp black lines.  Why does it become smudged ?  Skin changes and thins as we age, some colour is absorbed by the body, and some pigment remains, without its crisp edge.

Is cosmetic tattooing safe ?

When it’s carried out by a fully trained and experienced technician, yes very.  The pigments Perfect Creations use are from known sources in France and supplied by Natural Enhancement.  They are hygienically prepared and packaged, created from natural minerals, specifically selected for their safe, non-toxic, hypoallergenic properties.  These cosmetic tattoo pigments are quite different from conventional tattoo inks.  With conventional tattoo ink the colour is more opaque and can be implanted in clean dense lines with a single pass.   It is not advisable to have cosmetic tattoos using permanent pigment, would you want that same style and colour of eyebrow when you are 80 ?

Permanent make up is the art of using pigments, in the form of natural iron oxide to the dermal layer of the skin in almost any colour the client chooses. The results derived from permanent cosmetic enhancements are a convenient ‘quick fix’ with long lasting results – appropriate for today’s busy life styles.

Do I need an allergy test ?

An allergy/patch test is available, and a test can be carried out a minimal 2 hours prior to a tattoo to see if there is any sign of an immediate allergic reaction. Pigment allergy tests are inconclusive and will not guarantee you to have no future reaction, they are more for your piece of mind rather than any result. Allergic reactions to pigments and numbing creams are exceedingly rare, so tattoos are carried out at the same time as the consultation unless the client asks otherwise

Does having a cosmetic tattoo hurt ?

As the face is such a sensitive area cosmetic tattooing is carried out with your comfort in mind.  Numbing creams are used making the process quite bearable, and the highly advanced cosmetic tattoo machine and needles Perfect Creations uses causes minimal skin damage, meaning less pain with easier, quicker healing.  I’m very mindful managing your pain expectations, so the areas you want to have cosmetic tattoos won’t be as difficult as you could imagine.  Afterwards the area may be a little sore, for eyes and brows this settles quickly, lips a little longer.  Aftercare packs and healing advice are given for each treatment area

Can I bring someone with me ?

Yes you can bring one person with you, it’s quite nice to bring along a friend, family member or partner and they can stay in the room with us, or leave for a time.   Please let us know if you are bringing someone along.  I reserve the right to ask the guest to leave if the session is becoming distracting.  No one under 18 years old is allowed during a tattoo appointment

What happens after the treatment ?

Afterwards the area tattooed may be a little swollen and red, this is very individual.  The colour will appear darker and more intense, this lasts for several days as the area begins to heal.  Aftercare advice and balms will have been given to make this initial healing more comfortable.  Complete healing can take 2 to 4 weeks, during this time the pigment will mature into the skin and its true colour will emerge.  Top up visits are after 4 weeks.  Having had all these procedures myself, I am able to explain the healing process and how soon you’ll be back to normal

Health & Safety

Perfect Creations uses the Natural Enhancement branded Cosmedic digital machine, and like medical equipment this is safe by design against cross contamination. Perfect Creations use fully disposable ‘single use only’ applicator cartridges, and the pen like device used for the procedure is digitally controlled,  and without deep vibration. Perfect Creations has both public and professional liability insurance to offer Permanent cosmetic tattoo treatments.

Does using advanced digital equipment really make a difference ?

Yes, to the speed with which the pigment can be implanted, the level of skin trauma, pain during the treatment and the ease of healing.  Less advanced and cheaper rotary pen machines tend to scratch the skin surface until the pigment is accepted, this causes the body to swell and produce lymph fluid which forms into scabs.   You may have especially heard of this bad scabbing with eyebrows, it really needn’t be like that

Using  an  advanced digital  machine and  a single use needle cartridge manufactured to ISO 9001 quality standards, clients experience  noticeably  less  discomfort,  minimal lymph fluid, less  anxiety, and less  swelling  than they  do with any rotary pen machine

The pigments I use are hypoallergenic emmollient-free and non-reactive  to achieve a natural cosmetic enhancement and benefit from:

  • Larger looking eyes with thicker, darker lashes – (Eyelash enhancement or Eyeliner)
  • Younger looking, fuller lips
  • Perfectly shaped eyebrows – (Hair by Hair Simulation)

Permanent make up fades away and so colour boosts are required 12 – 16 months after in order to refresh the original enhancement.

Having perfectly placed, fresh looking make up all the time is not only a boost for your self esteem but Permanent make up for the eyebrows ends the hassle of drawing brows evenly/ correctly everyday, or worrying if you have just wiped one brow off once you have been swimming or been caught out in the rain! You will benefit from having a shape that suits you perfectly and that frames your eyes beautifully! You will never have to worry that your eye brows are uneven or that they are the wrong shape for you

Permanent make up for eyeliner puts an end to irritated eyes from topical eye liner, smears, watery eye streaks, and residue collections in the corners of the eyes. How many times have you

Permanent make up for the lips ends the unwanted transfer of lipstick colour onto objects and people. Clients who suffer with visual impairment, and unsteady or arthritic hands find it difficult to apply topical cosmetics and so can benefit greatly.

What must I do before and After my treatment?

If you are prone to coldsores it is important that you take an ant-viral medication before having a lip enhancement. As a general rule 3 days before and 3 days after should be sufficient. Your doctor can prescribe Acciclover tablets for you. The procedure does not cause cold sores, but if the virus is lying dormant in the skin it can irritate it and can cause an outburst.

If you have had an eye procedure and you are prone to eye infections, it is advisable that you purchase an antibiotic eye cream that contains Chloraphenical such as Optrex Eyes or Golden Eye. You can find these at any Chemist. They will prevent and treat any unwanted infections. Please apply a healing balm to the enhancement 3 times a day to keep it from drying up and flaking off. Vaseline is fine, but it must be a new pot and applied using a clean unused cotton bud to prevent cross contamination. Do not pick, peel or touch your new enhancement and allow it to heal naturally on its own, taking care to follow your after care guidelines.

Pre Procedure Advice

Prior to your permanent cosmetic enhancement think about the look that you wish to achieve. As an expert in the field of colour analysis and makeovers, I will ensure that the correct colours and styles are chosen for you, however you are part of the decision-making process.

Permanent cosmetic enhancements normally require multiple application sessions. To achieve the best results you will be required to return for at least one control procedure, four to six weeks after the initial application.

Be prepared for the colour intensity to be significantly sharper and darker immediately after the procedure. This will subside and become softer as the skin heals. This process can take up to fourteen days.

General Pre Advice

  • Since delicate skin or sensitive areas may be swollen or red, you are advised not to make social plans on the day of your enhancement.
  • Please wear your normal make-up to your enhancement appointment.
  • Do not take aspirin or Ibuprofen 2 days prior to and after your enhancement.
  • Do not discontinue any medication before consulting your doctor.
  • Keep alcohol intake to a minimum 2 days prior to and after your enhancement.
  • A sensitivity test will be performed, unless waived upon request.
  • Do not use Retin A skincare products close to the enhancement area 1 month prior to and after your procedure.
  • Do not use AHA skincare products close to the enhancement area 2 weeks prior to and after your procedure.
  • As with electrolysis the National Blood Service does not accept donations of blood for 1 year after a permanent cosmetic enhancement.

Eyebrow Enhancement

  • Waxing treatments should be performed no less than 3 days prior to your enhancement.
  • IPL laser hair removal should be performed no less than 2 weeks prior to your enhancement.
  • Electrolysis treatments should be performed no less than 5 days prior to your enhancement.
  • Eyebrow tinting should not be undertaken for 2 weeks prior to and after your enhancement.

Eyeliner Enhancement

  • Eyelash tinting or eyelash perming treatments should be carried out no sooner than 1 week prior to or 2 weeks after your enhancement.
  • Do not wear contact lenses during or immediately following your enhancement procedure. Remember to bring your glasses. You may resume wearing your contact lenses 24 hours after the procedure.
  • You may have mild swelling after your enhancement procedure. As a safety precaution you may wish to have someone drive you home.

Lip Enhancement

  • If you are prone to coldsores it is important that you take an ant-viral medication before having a lip enhancement. As a general rule 3 days before and 3 days after should be sufficient. Your doctor can prescribe Acciclover tablets for you. The procedure does not cause cold sores, but if the virus is lying dormant in the skin it can irritate it and can cause an outburst. You are also advised to use Zovirax for 5 days before and after as an extra precaution.
  • IPL laser hair removal should be performed at least 2 weeks prior to your enhancement.
  • Lip wax or bleaching treatments should not be undertaken for a 2 week period prior to and after your enhancement.

Therapist vs Self Help skin care……

Each person’s skin ages differently. When a skincare routine is customised by a therapist, individual concerns will be identified. For example, if skin is sensitive, it needs to be strengthened, and hydration levels may need to be improved. Only then would you move on to superceutical-strength skincare to address issues such as wrinkles or sagging, and after that, put the client on a maintenance program.

Above all, it’s important to listen to your skin and make sure it has all it needs to function correctly. Illness, stress, changes in lifestyle and medication can all have an impact on the skin. A healthy skin is like a happy woman – it likes to eat, drink and communicate!

Learning how to Have A.C.E Skin at the International Institute for Anti-Ageing

I am currently on a training course at the International Institute for Anti-Ageing. It is a one week course where I am learning about Environ which is a Scientific skin care range and an Advanced Nutritional Program that really makes a difference.  Having trained up in many different product ranges in the past I am happy to say that this range really is results driven and works deeper than a cosmetic product. The Skin care range which you apply topically combined with the Vitamin Supplements that you ingest work together by feeding the skin and fortifying it from the outside and in.  It renews and repairs the skin cells whilst also protecting them and slowing down the ageing process.

80 percent of the product contains Vitamin A which is naturally found in our skin but is lost daily through light and free radical exposure. Free radicals are basically baddies from poor diet, pollution, computer screens, Sun, smoking, medications and even excessive exercise that break down the skin cells health and proper function.  The depletion of vitamin A in our skin leads to pigmentation, lines, wrinkles, rosaecea etc. Environs aim is to replenish these lost nutrients – putting back in what we are losing. Vitamin A is the Skins Normaliser it ;

  • Repairs and generates skin health
  • Stimulates cell turnover
  • Protects skin from environmental attack
  • Plumps the skin
  • Feeds and detoxifies by stimulating blood circulation
  • Balances oil secretions
  • Stimulates your collagen and elastin
  • Hydrates at a dermal level
  • Supports the skins immunity
  • Evens out the skin tone

Another Key ingredient in the product  is Vitamin C.

  • Hydrates
  • Heals
  • Brightens and lightens
  • Calms
  • Protects

And of course Vitamin E

  • Protects from environmental attack
  • Reflects UV
  • Hydrates
  • Heals

The AVST range stands for Advanced Vitamin Skin Therapy and is a step up skin care system that allows your skin to gradually get used to the high level of active vitamin A and C as the concentration increases as you work through at a sensible speed.

I am excited to learn more and looking forward to tomorrow.

Environ Cosmetic Roll CIT

Environ Cosmetic Roll CIT is the latest breakthrough in skin care treatments, allowing for improved penetration of vitamins into the skin layer. The Cosmetic Roll-Cit consists of “micro-needles” that puncture the horny layer of the epidermis. Once the epidermis has been breached, the active ingredients in your skin care products can reach into the depths of the skin exponentially more effectively than simple topical application, thereby assisting natural repairing of fine lines and wrinkles.

The higher the levels of vitamin A and vitamin C that can penetrate into the lower layers of the epidermis, the more collagen can be made. Therefore allowing natural collagenesis to occur.

The Cosmetic Roll CIT help restores skin tightness, smooth fine lines, reduces pigmentation, thickens thin skin, softens scars and reduces dilated blood vessels. Skin needling is not painful, does not damage the skin and can be used on all areas of the body.
